It can be hard to figure out how babies who develop late-onset GBS disease got the bacteria. The bacteria may have come from the mother during birth or from another source. Other people that live with someone who has GBS bacteria, including other children, are not at risk of getting sick.

Your doctor will take swab samples from your vagina and rectum and send them to a lab for testing. A positive test indicates that you carry group B strep. To prevent group B bacteria from spreading to your baby during labor or delivery, your doctor can give you an IV antibiotic — usually penicillin or a related drug — when labor begins.
