Ninja 250 what type of oil
Until then, use a quality brand and change it more frequently than the manual calls for. It's made for turbo-diesel trucks, but it works great in the Ninjette. There are a couple different Shell oils with the Rotella brand. Get the full synthetic, not the synthetic blend. Rotella T6 is a fully synthetic oil with a very high film strength, which means it doesn't dry off of metal parts easily, and it lubricates well even during periods of reduced pressure and reduced flow.
Rotella T6 is a 5W "cold" number oil, so it will flow easier when cold, and since it's a full synthetic, its cold flow characteristics are excellent to begin with. Also, if you review the oil requirements for the EX, the oil's "hot" number is supposed to be either 40W or 50W to properly protect the engine at its full operating temp. With Rotella's 40W "hot" weight, you won't be sacrificing its ability to protect the engine when it is fully warmed up. You've probably had friends tell you that you have to run motorcycle-specific oil in your bike. Riders usually use these oils because they are worried that non-moto oil will be detrimental to their wet clutch. What they are really worried about is oil that is labeled Energy Conserving. Energy conserving EC oils are made to be more slippery than conventional oils, which may cause the clutch to slip on some motorcycles. If you put EC oil in your bike and do feel clutch slippage, just change the oil to non-EC; that should make the problem go away.
Note that newer EC oils are labeled 'resource conserving'. But would it be bad to just add some oil and run that for a couple days before doing a full oil change? Thanks again for all the replies!! I'm a total noob to all of this! March 23rd, , PM Tigerpaw. Your oil should not be getting low on a good engine. If you don't the oil will definitely appear low. If your oil is actually low, go ahead and add some.
Don't ride it, if it truly is low. Mixing will be ok for a short term fix. You will need to figure out what caused it to be low. These engines don't use much oil when working properly. March 23rd, , PM Insan3guy. I've seen it for as low as 14 on sale mixing oils shouldn't be too much of a problem, and you're going to be changing it soon anyway.
It'll be fine. Has it gone down since you have owned it? It could have been improperly filled from previous maintenance. It could appear very, very low I don't know really. I've had it for a couple months at least and I hadn't really checked until very recently. So I don't think that it was the previous owner. I bought it from a longtime motorcycle rider and someone who seemed to know quite a bit about motorcycle maintenance.
It been ridden quite a bit since I bought it. Also, the oil light comes on when I turn the key on, but usually goes off when I start the motorcycle. I'm pretty sure this happened when I first got it, and I don't remember if it stopped happening at any point in time, but I know that it's also happening now.
Is that normal? I mean I'm pretty sure that most of the oil is gone, so I would guess that the oil light would come on. But it goes off after I begin riding. March 23rd, , PM quarterliter. Do not ride the bike if the oil is low. Dont even start it. Add oil. Doesn't matter what brand right now. Last futzed with by quarterliter; March 23rd, at PM. Reason: typo. Check the level when the bike is balanced or on the center stand center stand is more approximate.
The oil light should be on when you turn the key before you start it up. But it should go out immediately when you start it up. I haven't been riding it recently until I get an oil change, but at the moment it's my only vehicle so I'm without one right now.
I work at a feed and supply store and they have an automotive section, but they don't have motorcycle stuff and they don't even have synthetic oils. There are some 10W oils here which is what someone earlier suggested and I'm wondering if I should purchase a quart to make sure the oil isn't too low, and then drive somewhere to get some Rotella T6 at a later date.
How important is it that I have the correct oil if I'm only goin to ride it for a couple of days? March 23rd, , PM dcj Originally Posted by mrudich. March 23rd, , PM jkv General oil changing question for you guys: Some people change oil every 5k miles, while it was mentioned here that 2k miles might be more appropriate due to the Ninjette's high rpms.
I normally change the oil filter when I change oil certainly if I were to go 5k miles between oil changes. So on to the question: do folks who change oil at 2k miles or 1k miles, or whatever also replace the oil filter every oil change?
Originally Posted by dcj I don't have any oil at my house, so I will have to purchase some. And all the prices are relatively similar, so is there a suggested type to get to last me until I can get some better oil?
I realize I need to keep better track of my maintenance I'm very new to owning a motorized vehicle and have no previous knowledge on the subject. So I don't really know exactly what I'm doing.. But I guess everyone starts there.. I do have a pressure gauge and check my tire pressure regularly. I have not yet checked the chain I'm not quite sure how to do it.
I'm definitely working on learning how to properly maintain my motorcycle. If you're doing an oil change at 1k then re-using the filter would be alright. But at 2k I would change it. Shell Rotella 15w I would use it for your oil change as well.
It's a very good oil, even though it is not synthetic. Borrow some oil from your neighbor for now. Doesn't matter what brand or viscosity. You will do engine damage riding without enough oil. Actually I have another question. Is it bad to switch from synthetic to non-synthetic? Like I said I'm not sure what type of oil the previous owner used, so I don't know of he used synthetic or normal. I've heard some places that once you go synthetic, that you shouldn't go back to normal oil.
