Jul 16, When Afro was young his father, Rokutaro, was challenged by the Number 2, Justice. In the battle that followed Afro's father was beheaded before his eyes, his still living head thrown in front of him as Justice removed the Number One Headband.
He then told Afro he was sorry that he had to see his father's death and that Afro would be filled with hatred for him.
He told Afro to challenge him when he was ready to duel a God before walking away cackling. Afro took his Father's head and the Number 2 headband from Mt. Shumi and lived on the edge before he was ambushed by bandits who easily overpowered him and took the Number 2 headband for themselves, leaving him to die. He was rescued by Sword Master and Jinno , who then raised him in the Sword Master's dojo for orphaned children where he was to be trained as a swordsman.
During Afro's time at the dojo he killed numerous lowlifes in an attempt to learn the location of the stolen Number 2 Headband before learning his Sword Master was the Number 2. He questioned his Master on the matter and met him beneath a bodhi tree for a duel, but the duel was disrupted by the arrival of the students and a huge mob of thugs and crooks seeking the Number 2 headband. In the ensuing battle, Sword Master sought to show Afro the terrible price of being the Number 2, but in the end he is killed by Afro, who has flashbacks to the scene of his fathers death, which angers him enough to do the deed.
Afro begins his journey to take vengeance on Justice and makes his way to Mt. Shumi by way of Low Down East whilst having to deal with those seeking the Number 2 headband including large numbers of thugs, The Empty Seven and their assassins, hired or otherwise built, such as the Afro Droid and Machine Ninja, as well as his childhood friend Jinno, who had been turned into the Cyborg Kuma. Afro at last meets Justice at the end of season 1 where he engages him in a duel.
He slices off both of his arms, and narrowly avoids a hidden third arm before removing it and a piece of his chin, mostly decapitating Justice. After a moment, Justice begins talking again and stands up, then rights his head and attempts to impale Afro through the head with a spike manifested from the floor. Afro fakes dying to lure Justice close and surprises him when he attempts to take the No. He swings down the Spike and slashes Justice down to the waist knocking off his poncho.
He then viciously slices him hundreds of times till all that is left is a pile of chopped chunks of Justice and his hat which flies forward. Afro claims his Headband, becoming the new Number 1. The comedic relief character didnt contribute to the plot whosoever, some wouls say it's because he was inside Afro's head the whole time.
I thought that was kinda dumb and when they revelaed that during a scene where all of Afro's friends died i thought he didn't fit. All the villians except one were lackluster, the one being good was Afro's old friend from his childhood. I'd still give this a watch for how badass it is. Cat-Wings 24 July Japanese animation is highly-esteemed both within Japan and outside of the country.
Most of the Japanese animation that foreigners have seen are probably Japanese animation with English subtitles or dub. Afro Samurai is not a new filmed in but it's a new style of Japanese animation in a sense that Japanese and the US collaborative film and the screenplay is English.
The movie version was released in May The movie is obviously targeting the Japanese subculture fans within the US and it's brought back to Japan. Afro Samurai who is the main character in the story, presumably it just happened that way, nicknamed after his hairstyle and has sort of a Samurai spirit in the sense that he is in consistent in his beliefs of revenge, battle and friendliness, which is a stereo typical image of old Japan "Samurai ".
That might be fascinating those anime otaku in other nations. If the plot was made by Japanese staff and creators only, the film wouldn't be fascinating and would be just a boring film by halves mimicking the Western culture. Jackson or Phil LaMarr joined the film as voice actors and the hip-hop music is used, and the touch of animation is very stylish and aesthetic which is trying to attract them.
The story is very bloody, gore and revenge. Afro Samurai gives his word of honour to be on the top of success when his father was killed by Justice in front of him in his childhood. The tone of the film makes a bit alike "Kill Bill" or "Sin City". So for those who like more sensitive and complicated stories such as "Ghost in the Shell" or "Innocence" or "Akira", this may not be very intrigued. Flyer78 23 June I loved Afro Samurai for many reasons. The story isn't the most unique you will ever find, but the great action scenes and cool art style make up for it.
The fights are fast-paced and gory, and the art style is innovative and uses plenty of dark shadings to give every thing a shadowy tone. And I can't review this without mentioning the great job that Samuel L. Jackson and Ron Pearlman did with their voice acting. I just wish this could have went at least 20 episodes to really extend the story.
And since it was only 5 episodes, there was basically a fight in every single episode, and that takes away the feeling of drama and importance of the fights.
It just feels like an actionfest at times. But for the 5 episodes that it lasted, it was a very fun and entertaining anime. Anime can be categorized by action and adventure but this is a new category decapime. It is violent, sexy and surprisingly very well done and makes most long running series wish that they could this awesome.
I honestly can say it's story is very short and makes the viewer make up their mind if they so choose. The animation is stellar and voice acting is extremely well done. If you can't stand blood or gore please don't watch.
If you do own the Director's Cut or Murder Sessions then you will know that a lot of effort went into this anime. With that being said it is honestly a great anime for anyone who loves being a dude.
The story was so superficial that it looks like they suddenly found an idea and started drawing without thinking about the plot. Headband didn't amaze me from the first episode to the end and also in the Resurrection. They couldn't reflect the power of headbands to us. And I learned that you can cut a man's head off with your gun. Music part is the best part of Afro. I know RZA is creative dude but I didn't expect this much.
Soundtracks are really tight. Images are also good. They really visualized well but music and drawings aren't enough to save Afro.
I was really bored and wasn't impressed but I cant tell it's a regret. I advise you to watch Afro Samurai. Maybe I expected more because I imagined differently.
I'm sure a lot of people were involved in making Afro Samurai but I cannot discuss this show without mentioning the Wu-Tang Clan. It was an iconic rap group that dominated the s, a team of seven members who served different roles in making the Wu-Tang what it was.
After Ol' Dirt McGirt passed away, the Wu-Tang weren't the same, spewing out a few good but ultimately forgettable albums. This 5-episode anime was perfect for the Wu-Tang, combining rap and a love for martial arts into one, and this is why RZA, my favorite member of the bunch, created this show's soundtrack.
Afro Samurai is about a swordsman who witnessed his father's murder as a young boy and his blood-filled journey to exact revenge on the gunman who killed his dad. Before I became a fan of the Wu-Tang, before I watched a lot of anime, I checked out Afro Samurai with my little brother a couple of years back on Netflix and saw everything except for the last episode.
At the time, I thought it was an excellent anime that could be improved, rating it a 7 out of A few weeks ago, I decided to re-watch Afro Samurai to see if I still hold the same opinion of this show that I had before.
Some theme songs are colorful and extravagant while others are complex and emotional. Now you're probably saying "Okay, well the theme song sucks. Anything good about this show? The acting in Afro Samurai is simply fantastic mainly because a handful of great American-based actors and actresses were brought to the fold; Ron Perlman, known for his work in Titan A. Oh yeah, and there's an African-American protagonist here a first for anime titles as well as a couple of other black characters too Always a thumbs-up for me.
These are all the positive traits that I could find here. Afro is the titular character of this anime, and he's one of those quiet types. He's a lonely swordsman marked by trauma and frustration whom the show portrays as a figure deserving sympathy, but Afro simply comes across as uninteresting.
Through Afro's quest in ancient Japan with robots and rocket launchers, other characters are introduced. Ninja Ninja is my favorite, Afro's much-more-talkative sidekick who wittily comments on what he observes and gives unwanted advice to our protagonist.
Along with Justice, other villains are after Afro's head such as Afro Droid the producers are real imaginative with their character names, aren't they? The embodiment of fury, he is a man confined to a bear-like robotic armor who wields two blood-stained swords and is determined to slay the swordsman he once called his friend.
Sadly, not even Jinno could save Afro Samurai from itself. The over- the-top fight scenes and general lack of characterization could be forgiven but the head-scratching ending about non-violence really frustrated me. Afro Samurai doesn't deserve to be labeled a series; it's a barely above-average 5-episode bloodfest of an OVA with plot holes aplenty that fails to be seen as a serious title. It's one of the classic examples of a "turn-your-brain-off" show, the kind that action fanatics enjoy without thinking about aspects that really solidifies and legitimizes a series.
You could call Afro Samurai overrated but I'm disappointed because I expected something better from an anime associated with the Wu-Tang Clan.
This show was pretty cool. From the music to the action scenes. Well kids, i'm going to defend this show, because there's a lot too it you guys are missing out on. Afro Samurai is the new anime produced by and starring Mr. Like the great works of Shinichiro Watanabe, this work employs heavily the influence of western culture, specifically black western culture, which i suppose makes sense considering our stoic protagonist.
Okay, History lesson over, the reason i wanted to make you read all that is so that you have a better idea of where Afro Samurai is coming from, it is, for all intents and purposes, the coming together of cultures that are not, and have never been so far apart as you may think.
It also brims with bleak visuals that are reminiscent of the good old classic samurai battles. And purely from an action standpoint, the anime is a visual feast that keeps you at the edge of your seat throughout its runtime. And if you have already seen, you might want to read on further to know more about the prospects of its renewal. With only 5 episodes in its first season, the anime ended on May 4, The first season was then followed by a sequel movie which released on January 25, This means the creators of the series have the complete freedom to take its storyline in any direction without relying on any source material.
So if they intend to, the makers of this show can easily create a whole new sequel for it.
