How fast are supersonic jets
But she expects Overture to be operated as a "net-zero carbon aircraft". Central to Boom's plan is for Overture to run entirely on sustainable aviation fuel Saf. That can take the form of "posh biodiesel" made out of everything from waste animal fat from the farming industry to specially grown high-energy crops, explains Dr Guy Gratton, associate professor of aviation and the environment at Cranfield University. But one big problem is that "the world is very far from having anything like the production capacity needed" to produce enough biofuel to power the entire aviation industry, he says.
Boom predicts "power-to-liquid" processes - where renewable energy such as wind power is used to produce liquid fuel - will make up the shortfall. It may well be done but it has not been done yet. Despite the enormous cost of Concorde's development more than 50 years ago, it is thought to have been profitable for British Airways in its final years of operation. Concorde was seen as a luxurious way to travel with tickets costing more than a first class seat on a regular jet.
Today, the wealthiest travellers may favour private business jets, says Dr Gratton. Rather than travel first class on a commercial jet with the public, the rich can charter compact private planes that fly on demand, directly to-and-from their airports of choice. Avoiding the check-in desk and luggage carousel can shave time off travelling too. Ms Savitt said Boom's research suggested passengers wanted speed and that faster planes could "deepen human connections and make better business relationships".
Unlike Concorde, the company expects Overture to be profitable for airlines even if tickets are sold for the same price as a "regular business-class fare".

Air Force. It recently announced plans to develop an Air Force 2 , a supersonic jet for the vice president and cabinet-level officials. The poster child of supersonic flight, Aerion had been working on a supersonic jet for almost two decades, but ran out of cash in May. Courtesy Aerion Supersonic.
Even small government contracts offer companies bragging rights and insight into research and regulatory agencies. To deal with noise, fuel inefficiency, and the many other significant technical issues, what every aspiring SST maker needs most of all is money.
Spike Aerospace says it will neutralize the sonic boom on its passenger business jet so it can fly to cities like London. Courtesy Spike Aerospace. Government contracts of one or two million dollars are meaningless, he said. Reno-based Aerion Corporation is a case in point. In May, it issued a stunning announcement.
After nearly two decades of working on a supersonic business jet, it said it was shutting down. It had a plane that could fit seamlessly into airports, an engine deal with GE and an operational procedure that it claimed would allow the plane to pass through Mach 1 soundlessly, though not necessarily consistently.
It had a partnership with Boeing. It had a plan to launch its first commercial flights by What it did not have was money. The S has a lavish business-jet interior designed to compete with first-class cabins.
It is a terrible outcome. At some point, everybody, including investors, want to see parts. That is the route Boom Supersonic took. Exosonic is working with the US Air Force to develop a supersonic jet to transport the US vice president and cabinet-level officials.
Courtesy Exosonic. An investment in Boom, he says, is a billion-dollar investment for a multi-billion-dollar payoff.
