Should i keep my serving hatch
Is there any particular advice you'd have on doing the job? Is there any tips you'd have on doing it then I'd be most grateful. Thanks for your help. Re: Partially filling a serving hatch Post by dewaltdisney » Sat Jul 08, am Well not necessarily G, I think that you should always future proof as best you can when you do a job.
Looking ahead you can detect trends so it is best to conform to the common themes in homes. Looking at how kitchen trends go you can reckon on ten years before a look becomes dated. Some modern looks will date quicker then others and it is hard to spot the evergreen look. Back to serving hatches, they are actually quite useful in some situations but they smack of the 60's and look awful now. The test is if you were viewing your house to buy would it put you off along with dated kitchens and bathrooms.
This is just my view. Re: Partially filling a serving hatch Post by Grendel » Sat Jul 08, pm Funny you should say about how things are changing kitchenwise. Listening to You and Yours on radio 4 the other week there was an article about kitchens and they talked to a designer who was saying that more and more places are being built without a kitchen at all.
He himself hadn't used or lived in a home with an oven for best part of a decade and his rational did make some sense even if I wouldn't agree. Firstly , as he said , a kitchen takes up otherwise valuable space and some spend an enormous amount of money on a kitchen which without the running costs can add up to tens of pounds per day over the life of that kitchen. When asked where his food comes from he explained how it was all brought in and living in London his choice was not limited to pizza and burgers , practically anything is available and all he needed at his home was a coffee maker.
I think any art etc is going to cost more? It's just a very tight budget so not paying for 2 whole walls vs dad doing a bit of skimming himself for the tiles was the idea. Probably wouldn't go for massive pieces of art so don't need to worry about sending the money there instead.
Walls and ceiling are about to get their base coat of white so we won't feel quite so much like a building site! You could leave as it is or perhaps put a nice piece of stained glass in it. This makes it into a feature and lets the light through as well. I like this idea but my husband has an irrational hated of stained glass! I am thinking an alcove on the lounge side and a sort of feature notice board thing in the kitchen. I have, and the kitchen is quite dark so any light is good.
I can't quite picture an internal window without thinking it's a bit strange! Would love to see good examples. I have an opening between two rooms - slightly bigger but similar. I have small speakers Sonas with Alexa on it for both rooms, or a small radio may be suitable here - also have a light. I have had a wooden venetian blind made to fit so that it can be closed off if needed. I blocked mine off - and its really frustrating now to have to walk round carrying hot food. I also miss out on any conversations going on in the dining room while I'm in the kitchen I took all the trim off and it looked ok - I will be unboarding it very soon!
Thanks Skinnyjules, that;s why we kept it until now. But now the table is in the kitchen diner it's not such an issue. And I like not having to listen to kids programmes whilst I am in the kitchen! I am coming around to making it a bigger window I must say, even with an extra window the kitchen is quite dark. Thanks all for your thoughts. It shows you the exact size of rooms etc. I think this would make the dining space more inviting. I think its nicer to have a dining area looking out and opening into a garden than a cooking area. Also you lose worktop space to the patio doors, rather than a window above the sink, as I presume you have now? Serving hatch Q. Well anything you do will be an improvement, the hardboard needs to go for a start! You could make it an internal window to keep the noise and smells separate and then use it to display plants or ornaments.
Old serving hatch Q. We had an original serving hatch which has been blocked up. It hangs from the original hinges and chalk sits on the handle.
Thanks for your advice both of you. We live in England to answer your question Gabby. Is there a rule in Scotland that the aisles have to be cm and if so why? Jonathan, I was kind of thinking we would want to use the island for eating meals on like we do now with our current kitchen table, but I guess if the DR is open to the kitchen then it wouldn't be a problem to take a few steps more to the dining room table because we use it so infrequently at the moment I am finding that hard to visualise.
I am going to post a better plan of our current kitchen and dining room with the pantry taken out and I am also going to post a photo looking out from the window in our dining room. I am wondering if we did turn the DR into our kitchen could we make the window ledge higher and put the units in an L-shape so we could put the sink in the window?
